The Way We Are

In this page, I will attempt to describe in brief The way of living of Indian people. This is a rather difficult task, so I will make it easy for myself by describing this region wise and in some instances, state wise.

Let me first take up the north, which you can take to be comprised of the States of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Up, and of course, Bihar. The people in these parts form a cultural entity which is closely related. Hence the choice of the region. The predominant religion is of course, Hindusim, and people are by and large very religious. Religion does play an Important role in the life of people here. Apart from hindusim, every other religion in the world exists here.

The people are very friendly and helpful in general, and daily life revolves between the Job and Home( as every where). Ambition is not the distinguishing characteristic of people here, with the large majority being meek and unenterprising. Most have to struggle too hard to earn a living to think of anything more than feed themselves. at the same time however, Golf courses , bowling and shooting alleys do co-exist here.

Vast majority of the people are poor, and Bihar being the poorest and most illiterate state in the country although Bihar is the richest state in terms of mineral resources. Contrary to what one would expect, this richness of resources has not translated into prosperity for people, courtesy some of the most corrupt politicians in India. Poverty and Illiteracy also brings other ills, such as Superstition, and lack of amenities for leading comfortable life.

Punjab and Haryana are however, a study in contrast. The people here are quite enterprising and hardworking and this has made Punjab and Haryana one of the most prosperous states in our country. Their fertile farms produce much of the grain produced in india. These hardy fellows, however do not have too subtle a taste in matters of art and study.

The prominent festivals in the Northern Part of India is Holi and Diwali. Holi is a festival of color and friendship, when people can take liberties with each other, throw colors on each other and still get away. People form small groups and visit each other's houses singing and dancing all the way. They distribute sweets and in general have fun. Diwali is a festival of light and celebrates( To reuse a much used phrase) the victory of good over evil. On the night of Diwali Houses are well lit up and sparkle with candles, diya's and now-a days, electric lights. The night sky is filled up with fireworks, and booming of huge crackers fills up the air. this is our biggest festival.

Northern people have in general a robust and healthy spirit with a kind of rugged joviality, they don't care much for authority, and in general will seek ways to minimize the effort they have to put in to acquire any thing.

The people of south in general are straight in nature, and generally they will follow a rule, once been laid out, without having so much a thought about the usefulness of it. Their major food is Of course Idli, Dosa , and rice. Give them rice and they can manage to eat rice with salt water! (pun intended) They are quite hardworking ( IN general more hardworking than northerners) and have a good inclination towards arts, science, and software. In general, they have limited creativity.

The predominant religion is again Hinduism, and the main festival is Durga Pooja, which is celebrated in the north as dussehra. The people of South are in general quite friendly, although Tamilians seem to have an inferiority complex vis a vis the Northerners which often translates into rude behavior.

Kashmir deserves special mention as a part of the country which has is own flavor of Indian Culture. Although the machinations of Pak Gov. does not allow the people there to live in peace, The situation has now improved somewhat. Terrorism is a curse to humanity and the countries which spew terrorists to other countries must be crushed to oblivion.

So that's about the size of it, fellows. You noticed I dealt with the subject in a general manner. Really, if I'd have written more this page would have turned into a book!

And now, it's time for some history lessons!
