If everybody is being controled by a higher being, we do things (sometimes) and it is because something else is controlling us. Even though we don't know it.
Hail,Hail is a song where Eddie is telling us that he is unhappy, with his rock stardom, the unwinnable battle with Ticketmaster and those who have fullfilled their dreams. Back in 1994 in a Mammoth string of interviews, (which seem to be rare these days); When asked about Kurt Cobain's suicide, Vedder told Rolling Stone that when he was younger at high school he often pondered suicide everyday as often as mealtime. He told Rolling Stone of how he was not accepted, but in fact he was very popular and all the girls thought he was cute.
Even if you don't like it, you are who, who you are.
In My Tree is about being in your own world where no one can bother you.
It is based on a note (see the liner notes) and on the note there are three crooked hearts and swirls all around.
Also, everybody has something different that makes them smile.
It is Eddie talking about himself in 3rd person. He is singing about two "sides" of him coming together for a little while.
About a drug habit. Some say it may be about Mike and his short lived problem.
About Eddie getting sick and, therefore, missing some of the 1995 shows (he left in the middle of the June 24, 1995 show at the Golden Gate Polo Fields in San Francisco, CA. because it was so bad). He was hospitalized and couldn't sleep (food poising). He felt so bad that it was like he was bitten by the devil and he (the devil) was waiting for him to die.
Lukin is in reference to Matt Lukin of the band Mudhonney. Eddie likes his refrigerator. ;-) The last part of the song is how a woman who follows Eddie around broke into his house and claims that her son is Eddie's. She is a little nuts.
Why live in the past when it has already happened? Live for today.
It may be about how mankind (in general) is all about money and material things.
I'm Open is saying that even though you may be grown up, all the answers may not be there. Change is good.
It's a lullaby. Eddie wrote it for Jack's son (rumor says).
