1) Once
Time: 3:51
Vedder, Gossard

Once is the second song in the "Mamason" trilogy. It is about an individual who goes on a killing spree because he has basically gone insane. He was able to control himself but now he can't. He is executed in the third song, "Footsteps."

2) Even Flow
Time: 4:53
Vedder, Gossard

Even Flow is about being homeless and/or a homeless man.

3) Alive
Time: 5:41
Vedder, Gossard

Alive it the first song in the "Mamason" trilogy. It is about a son who finds out that the man he called dad all those years isn't really his dad. His real dad was dying when he was only 13 years old. [NOTE: that supposedly really happened to Eddie. The next part is where he add fiction to his story.] The son then grows up and ends up looking just like his real dad (who the mother still loves) so, the mother makes love to her son. He can't remember anything except the look of her private part and all he can think is that he is still alive. This leads up to the next song where he goes insane and starts killing people (which is the song "Once").

4) Why Go
Time: 3:19
Vedder, Ament

According to the liner notes this song is for "Heather." Rumor has it that she was put into an insane hospital because her mom caught her smoking pot. She knows that there is nothing wrong with her but to get out she has to admit to something. Even though she has become stronger they want her to be a week, obedient, individual. Someone who agrees with, and follows every rule of, society. Whatever they want to hear, she will tell them. She wonders why she should go home to the person who put her there.

5) Black
Time: 5:43
Vedder, Gossard

Black is about losing someone extremely close to you. Someone you can't live without.

6) Jeremy
Time: 5:19
Vedder, Ament

Jeremy is based on the true story about a kid who shot himself in front of his class. The kids were always making fun of him, and his parents neglected him so, he decided to mess them up for life. He succeeded.

7) Oceans
Time: 2:41
Vedder, Gossard, Ament

Oceans is about two people (probably in love) in different places who know that they will eventually see each other again. It can also be someone asking someone else to wait for them.

8) Porch
Time: 3:30
Vedder

Porch is a love song. It's about breaking up and having to deal with never holding, loving, kissing, etc... the person again.

9) Garden
Time: 4:58
Vedder, Gossard, Ament

I always thought that a "garden of stone" is a graveyard. The song has something to do about death and what is after death. It doesn't matter where we came from, just what we are doing now and what we need.

10) Deep
Time: 4:18
Vedder, Gossard, Ament >

Deep is about a man (out on the ledge of a building) who tries drugs to cope with live. When that doesn't work he tries to hide his feelings inside of him. When that doesn't work, he jumps off the building committing suicide in front of at least one innocent individual (which probably messes her up continuing the cycle).

11) Release
Time: 9:06
Vedder, Gossard, Ament, McCready, Krusen

Eddie's father died before he could know him (that is part of Alive) and this is his way of talking to him now that he is gone.
