For you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
 (1 Th 5:2)

There are exhortations given in the scriptures to God's people, not unbelievers, to prepare for the day of the Lord.  Christians are called to be prepare for Christ's return so we can properly respond to Him.  It has nothing to do with His return itself- but our state of heart.  The most important thing about the day of the Lord is very clear- it will come unexpectedly.
There are many references to the day of the Lord in Scripture.  Many of them are referring to Christ's first coming.  Others refer to His second coming .  But there are also times it refers to  any time God comes to His people either in judgment or in salvation.  That could be very confusing--and has been for me at times-- unless the context is taken into account.
( Isa 13:6Joel 2:11; Mal 3:2)

In the Old Testament, Amos predicted that the day of the Lord would be very different from what people were expecting.  The people then thought it would be a time of joy and laughter and singing, but he told them it's be a time of grieving and judgment of their sin.  I don't imagine his words were any more popular then than they would be now.   When Jesus came that first time, His coming caught everyone by surprise. Many did not recognize Him because they were looking for the Messiah to come in a  very different way.
(Amos 5:18)

Christ's second coming will be the final day of the Lord.  In the mean time, there will be times when God will come to us, our family, and our friends.  We need to be watching for the signs of God's convicting work in our children, our friends, our coworkers, etc.  We must notice when God begins to do a special work in the lives of  the people in our church.  It may be we have an unusual sense of God's presence in a worship service and we begin to intercede for those who are present.  We must prepare ourselves now and pay attention to what is happening in the lives around us.  We may very well discover that the day of the Lord is at hand!

I think we are as blind to the time of the second coming, as those people were to the first coming!  We have been given signs to look for, but do we really know them?  Have we spent time pouring over those scriptures?  Or have they overwhelmed us?  Do we memorize and discuss them as much as we do the ones about how we (or our neighbor) should be living our lives??  I think not.
And yet, God has given us many things to watch for.  Christ warned those of His day--even of His eminent death, and they didn't get it.  He left His Word for us to read, memorize, share and use to prepare for the second coming. Let's commit ourselves to learning more---watching the world news with a new eye.  We have not only ourselves and our loved one to think about---but all those around us who do not know Him yet.  How will they ever be able to tell the impostor from the Christ?  They won't if we don't get the Word to them.  Many more will be lost if we remain complacent.
Below are 24 places in the scriptures I found that refer to the day of the Lord.  Let Him speak to you in a very personal way through them. You can print them out and cut them into cards to memorize one at a time if that will help. God bless!!

I am very grateful for the internet ministries I have come across, and for our Father for leading me into this site.  But, you know, there are many impostors out there.  Dust off those Bibles and get into them and let the Spirit lead you into and understanding and wisdom.  May you be encouraged and energized to further His kingdom wherever He leads you!
