RENT... how much can I say about one musical? After being captured and dragged into the soundtrack by a friend at school, this musical has now possessed all of my brain that does not belong to CATS!!! The strikingly raw but beautiful story of poor friends and lovers in a modern day New York seems to make one actually WANT to be poor and live in New York.... hmmm.... Well, here are some of my thoughts:
Favorite Characters: This is tough. REALLY tough. I really love Mark... I'm not that sure why... he just reminds me of myself! Angel is my other favorite - he (or should I say "she") just seems so giving and loving that she makes the story really come alive to me. She's also one of the most interesting characters I've EVER discovered! Something about the Santa drag just makes her likeable to me... hmmm... I also end up in tears whenever I hear "Without You" and the reprise of "I'll Cover You"... The day after I first heard the soundtrack, I went to see La Boheme with some of my RENThead friends, and ended up crying for the entire third act NOT because of La Boheme's Mimi dying, but because of Angel dying... they led me out after it was over, as I kept repeating the phrase "Screw Mimi... ANGEL'S DEEEAAADDD...." ahhh.... memories... ;)
Favorite Song: This is another tough one. I can't really pick between "Rent", "La Vie Boheme", "Today 4 U", and "Without You"... now I want to add "I'll Cover You" to that list... and add "One Song Glory" for good measure... Let me try this in a different way...
Least Favorite Songs: This isn't so hard... "Contact" makes me sick... a little TOO graphic... "Over the Moon" gets monotonous, and the noises Mimi makes in "Out Tonight" kinda make me squirm a little. These are just my opinions though - please, no hate mail!
Overall: MY OTHER FAVORITE MUSICAL!!! LA VIE BOHEME!!!
