Biography

Rene was the second choice (24th overall) of the Quebec Nordiques in the 1991 Entry Draft. His first season with the Nordiques was in 1993-94, when he played nine games and tallied two points (one goal, one assist). Through eight games in 1994-95, he notched three assists. In 1995-96, he was a member of the Stanley Cup-winning Colorado Avalanche, as he played in 33 games and recorded nine points (three goals, six assists). Rene played in a career-high 76 games in 1996-97, scoring 12 goals and a career-best 15 assists. In 1997-98, he scored a career-high 16 goals and 12 assists for a career-high 28 points. He also posted a plus-8 rating (second best on the team). Rene played junior hockey for Drummondville of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1990-93. Each season, his numbers improved, as he scored 65 points (25 goals, 40 assists) in 1990-91, 96 points (46 goals, 50 assists) in 1991-92, and 148 points (79 goals, 69 assists) in 1992-93. In 1993-94, Rene spent his first professional season with Cornwall of the American Hockey League, where he was named the league's Rookie of the Year. In 68 games, he scored 37 goals and 40 assists.
