The Blanket

This memory remains faint
Deep in the recesses of my brain
Something I shall never forget
Coupled by a feeling I can't explain
I can still see her smooth, soft skin
Pressed against the thick green blanket
I can smell her smell and hear her breath
Rhythmic and steady against that same blanket

She shows me she loves me as truly as I do her
Through not touch, nor word, nor deed
Only a single look, the one only lovers know
And in my heart I know she's the only one I need
I've loved in the past, but never as truly
I've given my heart before, but never as wholly
My heart's been ripped out, and returned,
But she knows, when I hurt, how to hold me
She knows how to make me smile
During those cold and lonely nights
She can set my heart afire with love
After any grudging vicious fights

On the unworthy green blanket
There laid a vision of purity
In the presence of a grateful man
Who knew purity in both love and beauty
And who knew that both belonged to her
