THE ARMED CITIZEN REPORTER: Page 3

This is the third page of stories of honest people who successfully defended themselves from illegally armed predators, sometimes without even firing a shot.

SOURCE: TWO MILLION YEARLY USE GUNS IN SELF DEFENSE FIGURE: These data come from the research of Professor Gary Kleck, a member of the ACLU, Amnesty International, and Common Cause. He is a lifelong Democrat. This man is definitely not a "pro-self defense" promoter. At least not until he did his research. He set out to prove gun control was needed, but after more than 20 years of research came to the conclusion that gun control would endanger the safety of citizens.

ONE DEAD, ONE WOUNDED AT PIZZA PARLOR: None of which were pizza parlor people. All were would-be robbers who were shot by the Orlando, Florida pizza store manager after they terrorized two young female employees and pistol-whipped him. One will never again rob anyone, which is good. The other won't for a long time, which is also good, but not as good as the first. Clinton and his anti-self-defense gang will be mortified, and that's good, too. (Source: "Orlando Sentinel" July 12, 2000)

WOULD-BE CHILD RAPIST FOILED: A man entered the Marysville, Washington bedroom of a 14-year-old girl in the dead of night intent on raping her. He choked her as she fought him. The noise awakened her brother, who attacked the man and they tumbled down the stairs. Then their father rushed from his downstairs bedroom with his gun, firing one round. The intruder set sail for elsewhere, leaving his t-shirt and sweater behind. He hasn't been seen nor heard from since, which is okay. This is the kind of a result you can expect when honest people have their own guns. The "bad guys" run away without attaining their objective, which is to "do dirt" to the "good guys." THAT'S McSTUPID! Absolutely. Michelle Malkin, a stunningly beautiful syndicated columnist, coined that phrase in her June 20 column: "Can somebody say that's McStupid? It's all about the national McDonald's management wanting to fire McDonald's maintenance worker Willis Lee for shooting and wounding two of four men who were (again) robbing the restaurant where he worked. He apparently got tired of seeing his co-workers "robbed with impunity" as his workplace was the frequent victim of these and other robbers, who robbed them, then came in the next day to eat. With the McDonald's management rules that assured robbers they would be unopposed, it's not surprising they were so brazen. But Lee changed all that. Maybe that's what management is mad about: they had a tacit agreement with robbers that they wouldn't be molested when they abused McDonald's employees at this location and Lee broke it. To their credit, local management refuses to fire him and local authorities won't charge him. But Malkin put it perfectly when she said: "McDonald's anti-gun policy is anti-safety and anti-worker. No one should be forced to risk their life for a Happy Meal." Amen, sister! I haven't noticed syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin being particularly "right of center" in her columns, but I'm going to have to start watching her more carefully. Apparently, she is definitely pro-self defense as the column previously mentioned shows. In it, she cited statistics from the study by senior research scholar at Yale University Law School John Lott, who says that "Even after accounting for the cyclical drop in crime nationwide, states with (easier) concealed handgun permit laws have seen murder rates drop by 8.5%, rape by 5% and severe assault rates by 7%. No wonder national surveys of police show they support concealed handgun laws by 3-to-1." Of course, those results come from the "rank-and-file" cops who work "in the trenches," not from the "police politicians," who have forgotten what that's like if they ever did work there. Why can't the politicians ever "get it?" (Source: Creators Syndicate, July 20, 2000)

DEPUTY SHERIFF ADVISES PROTECTING YOURSELF: When an inept burglar who lived in the same apartment complex stumbled through a window into a West Boca Raton Florida resident's apartment, he found himself under the gun of the resident, who called police while holding him at gunpoint. Police found both the burglar and his captor out front. Sgt. Rick McDermott (an "in the trenches cop") with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said: "Honestly, as a law enforcement officer I recommend protecting yourself." I'd bet that got him in trouble with the police politicians above him in the hierarchy. But the "bottom line" is there is one more criminal in jail because this resident had a gun.
