Byzantine-Russian
Icon Painting
with Dmitri Andreyev
|
The icon is an expression in symbolic
form of the teachings of the saints, ascetics and leaders of the Church
through the centuries.
When done according to the canon, (a special
set of rules governing spiritual practice and icon painting technique).
each stage from gessoing the board to applying the final olifa (oil sealant)
has a precise liturgical meaning.
The main task of the iconagrapher, literally
"icon writer," is to reveal his own nature in front of the image of God
and then, by creating the image on the icon board, his own nature can be
transfigured.
It is in this way that iconography is a
very practical spiritual discipline.

Hensche at Cape School of Art and teaches landscape painting and portraiture
