I believe that all people deserve to have the opportunity to communicate and to heal. Art is an important language for special people to be able to live full lives. I work with each individual to assess their needs, weaknesses and strengths. Treatment is then tailored to fit their needs for optimal success.
I specialize in working with adults, adolescents and children who are mentally, physically or emotionally challenged, including those with Downs Syndrome or Autism.
Art therapy helps bring about behavioral and emotional changes and stimulates personal growth during times of crisis, major life change, and grief.
Art therapy is the process of making art in a psychotherapy session. If the client is able, the art work is discussed as part of the therapy. The following is a hypothetical art therapy session. Amy drew a picture of her home (shown below). She included her host home family, a pet, flowers, furniture etc. She also included a snake in the front lawn. When talking about her picture, Amy discussed how much she liked her home. When asked about the snake in the front lawn, Amy was able to talk about how she is afraid that something bad is going to happen. Results: Amy is able to discuss her hopes and fears. It makes her feel better to be able to tell someone she trusts about her fears.
