A Life of Memories

You and I -- WE -- US --
I was never one,
I was always part of you,
The squabbles, tears, and fun.

It doesn't seem so long ago
when I said, "I Do,"
And then there came the children,
but there was always You.

The children took up all our time,
There was so much to do,
Though the honeymoon was over,
There was always You.

The years went by - our children grew,
And one by one they left,
We had taught them independence,
but deep inside, I wept.

I felt a loss, yet also pride,
for our children did succeed,
But our home now seemed so empty
though You tried to fill my need.

And then one day, with great surprise,
I saw my first gray hair,
And you were there to comfort me,
You were always there.

The gray hair went from one to two to
three to four to five,
"At least you still have hair," You said,
as You rubbed your scalp and sighed,
I looked at You with older eyes,
How dear You were to me,
Perhaps a second honeymoon --
How lovely that would be.

But then one day the phone rang,
The words just couldn't be true,
After all, right from the start,
There was always You.

But now You are no longer,
There is only me,
I try to be unselfish
and see you sleeping peacefully,
Away from all the problems
that life alone entails,
You're now at one with God and self --
Serenity prevails.

I go through all the albums,
I think of how time flew,
And I take comfort in the fact
that there was always You.

I wouldn't have missed it for the world,
I'm grateful for the tears,
for there are so very many
who have never had such years.

Thank you, God, for blessing me
with memories I can share,
I pray for those who are alone,
that they may know you care.

One thing I know for certain,
You've told me this in prayer,
I'll see my loved one once again,
I know that he is there,
Mingling among the angels
who watch us in plain view,
once again I'll see my love
and tell him "I love you."
