Tips

Collector's Lingo

Collectors often use abbreviations to describe the conditions of their dolls. Here are some of those abbreviations and their meaning.
  • NRFB - Never Removed From Box
  • MIB - Mint In Box (Good condition in its original box)
  • MNB - Mint No Box (Good condition but no box)
  • Mint & Complete - Good outfit (original) and all accessories in good condition
  • Customized Doll - A doll produced exclusively for a specific store
  • Limited & Collector Editions - Limited to certain amounts in production as defined by Mattel

Other Suggestions

  • If at all possible, try to keep dolls in their original cases. In some cases, dolls have decreased to half the value compared to an identical doll that has been kept in its original case, and deemed NRFB.

  • Dolls that are first in a series are usually a good investment. However, if you can collect all the dolls in a series, the respective Collection as a whole could worth more.

  • There is no way to predict whether dolls would increase or decrease in value. Some can double or triple in value, and some can decrease or retain it's original value.

  • Try to keep your dolls away from direct sunlight, and excessive dust. Sunlight can cause color to fade, and dust can potentially damage your doll.

  • If trying to get all the dolls to one series or collection is too taxing on your budget, then just get the dolls that you like. You can't go wrong with that.

  • Last but not least, the Links section of this site has places you can go to get more information on Barbie collecting.
