Ms. Pele

Ms. Pele (Madame Pele) is the goddess of the volcano.

hard to describe, incredible to experience..

Here the lava is flowing from an underground tube into the ocean.

This road is covered by lava. It used to run from Volcano National Park to the Puna district of the Big Island. Now it goes to the lava flow and stops.

This information isn't always up to date, but its the best available, without going there yourself. And then, go there yourself!

It's always different and always amazing!!

I usually hike in from the bottom of chain of craters road, checking first at the visitor's center in the park, of course. The hike has been about 45 minutes over cooled lava (read:wear good shoes/boots!). We go around 5 or 6 and stay until after dark when you can really see the lava glowing.

Walking back in the dark is a trip!!

Bring a flashlight, and water and snacks and something for pele!!

Life, as always, is at your own risk!! This site is for imformation only!!

Check out theeruption update!! These folks go to the volcano almost every day.

Here's the main volcano page, for all the volcanos on the Big Island and their history.
