Chapter 7

We lie side by side naked and breathless some time later when Ivy knocked on the door.

“I made some dinner. You two want any?” I glanced at John, he shook his head no.

“No thanks, Ive.” I turned to John and began running my fingers through his hair.

“We could grab some dinner at the airport.”

“When is your flight?”

“Not until midnight.”

“Good. Let’s take a shower before we leave.”

“Let’s?” John said raising an eyebrow at me.

“Well, if you don’t want to join me...” I said rolling over to get off the bed. I walked to the door of the private bath, “I guess I’ll have to take one all by myself.” I went in and turned on the water. I got in the shower knowing any minute John was going to join me. I heard the shower curtain move behind me. “Change your mind?” I said as I turned around.

“Changed my mind about what?”

“I thought you were John.”

“That boy is dead to the world in the bed. You tired him out.”

“Oh well,” I leaned forward and kissed Ivy. I guess I left that part out. Ivy and I had been casual lovers for about two years. We had tried the relationship thing but it didn’t work. So we dated other people and fooled around between relationships. We finished our shower and got dressed in clean clothes. I went back into my new room and she went back downstairs. “Hey, sleepyhead. You just missed your chance at a shower.”

“Oh man, you mean I fell asleep.”

“Yeah. You must have been real tired because it didn’t take long for you to fall asleep.”

“I was. I’m not eighteen any more.” He looked down a little embarrassed about his own comment regarding our age difference. I sat down next to him.

“John, it doesn’t bother me that you’re older than me. It shouldn’t bother you. You know if it did I never would have let you kiss me to begin with.” He looked up into my eyes as if to make sure I wasn’t lying. I kissed him and jumped up off the bed. I threw his clothes at him.

“Oh, you’re going to start that again, are you?” He pulled on his pants and grabbed a pillow. “Don’t start anything you can’t finish, girlie.” He smacked me playfully with the pillow. I ran to the other side of the bed and grabbed the other pillow. We wrestled around, hitting each other with the pillows. Finally, I ended up straddling him, pinning his wrists to the bed.

“Ha, I won!”

“No, I’d have to say you came out on top, but I’m enjoying it more.”

“Oh really,” I said in a low, husky voice. I leaned in and kissed his neck and brushed his lips with mine. Then I pulled back, still holding him down. “Now I’m enjoying it more.”

“Tease,” he gave me a playful pout. I laughed and got up off the bed.

“Finish getting dressed and we’ll leave for the airport.” I went downstairs with a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach.

“Wynter, do I have time to shower?” he called down the stairs.

“Yeah, go ahead John.” I sat down on the couch next to Ivy.

“Wynter, what’s wrong? You look upset.”

“Nothing.”

“You know you can’t lie to me. What’s wrong?”

“Have you ever felt yourself falling in love with someone when you know you shouldn’t?”

“Why?”

“I think I’m falling for John.”

“That’s not so bad, Wynter. He’s a great guy. Oh, are you upset about the shower? If I had known you liked him THAT much, I would have never...”

“No, it’s not that.”

“What is it then?”

“Well, he’s a rock star. I mean I don’t know what I’m getting myself into. What if he turns out to be an asshole?”

“He saved you from your mother, I severely doubt he’s an asshole.”

“But anybody would have done that.”

“Wynter trust your intuition, you are rarely ever wrong about these sort of things.”

“I know.” That was what was bothering me, my intuition was saying all systems go, but that just didn’t seem right. John came bouncing down the stairs right then.

“I’m ready to go.”

“Well that was a quick shower.”

“When it’s cold, you don’t exactly want to stay in it for a long time.”

“Ah, so I did when then.”

“I plead the fifth.”

I laughed, “I’ll be back late, Ivy. Don’t wait up.”

“Bye Wynter. Bye John, nice to meet you.”

“Bye, Ivy. Nice to meet you too.”

We went out to my car for the long drive to DIA. For a while we just sat in silence. I couldn’t take it any more, I just had to say something.

“I graduate on May 27.”

“I’ll try to come back to watch you.”

“Okay.”

“If I can’t come that day I will be back by the 31. We can pack your stuff and fly to New York.”

“Call me before so I know.”

“I plan to call you a lot more than that.” He looked over at me and out his hand on top of mine. “I don’t want to leave you, Wynter.”

“I don’t want you to go either and I would come with you, but I can’t.” I suddenly started laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“I’m sorry I ain’t there with you but you ain’t here with me,” I sang slightly off key.

“It’s not February and I plan to be with you a lot longer than two days.”

“I would kiss you if I wasn’t driving.” He laughed and kissed me on the cheek working his way up to my ear. “You’re gonna distract me, then we’ll crash,” I giggled.

“Mmm, too bad,” he said as he continued to nibble my ear and neck. Thankfully we were only five minutes away from the airport. I pulled into the space in the parking garage and unfastened my seatbelt. I turned straight into a kiss. I climbed on top of him and dropped the seatback down. I reached underneath me to unbutton his pants and was never more thankful that I had changed into a skirt after my shower. John unbuttoned my shirt and started kissing my breasts. A low moan escaped my throat as I gyrated my hips against John’s. Our pulses quickened and our breathing became heavier. I pulled John up so I could see his eyes. I stared straight into his soul as our bodies quaked with pleasure. I collapsed on top of him with a sigh. I felt him nuzzle closer to my ear.

“I love you, Wynter.”

“I love you, John.” I smiled to myself as he held me tighter. “Don’t leave me John, please.”

“Oh, Wynter don’t. Not right now.” I began to cry softly but I must have been shaking, because John noticed. “Don’t cry.” He pulled me up and wiped the tears from my eyes. “We’ll see each other again soon, I promise. Everything will be okay, honey. Hush now, don’t cry.”

“Okay. You know this is the first time I’ve had sex in a parking garage.”

“Me too. I’m starving. Let’s go in and get something to eat.”

“All right.” I climbed back into my seat. I buttoned up my shirt and put my sandals back on. I put my skirt back in place while John zipped up his pants. “Come on, there’s a restaurant and bar in the main terminal.”

We walked through the busy terminal towards the bar. We took a booth away from the TV screen. We ordered cheeseburgers and cokes and I began to wonder about John’s apartment in Manhattan.

“So what’s your apartment like?”

“Fairly big, nice layout.”

“How many rooms?”

“Two bedrooms.”

“Huh, so what’s your schedule like this summer?”

“We’re touring all of July and August but I’ll be home all of June.”

“So I’ll get to see you in June.”

“Well yeah, or you could...”

“Or I could what?”

“Come on tour with me. I’ll send you back to New York in time for school to start.”

“You don’t think we’re rushing into things.” Please say no, please say no.

“I wish I could make it go faster.”

“Good.” I leaned over the table and kissed him. The waitress was standing above us with our food when I sat back. I giggled, John blushed, and the waitress sighed and rolled her eyes. She plopped our food down in front of us and marched off. “Gee, doesn’t she seem happy with her job?”

“Oh yeah. I bet she just loves it.”

We ate as we chatted about what touring was like. It sounded really hectic and I was afraid we would have no time together. John assured me that he would not have asked me to come along if he thought he would never see me. We finished our food and ordered more drinks. I was laughing and smiling but in the back of my mind a horrible thought was lurking. He was leaving soon, very soon. I just wanted to make the most of the time I had with him. I moved over to his side of the booth and leaned against him. He put his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.

“I’m really gonna miss you, Wynter.”

“I’m gonna miss you too, John.”

“You know I really meant what I said earlier, right?”

“What did you say?” I teased. He pulled me onto his lap, so he could look into my eyes.

“I love you.”

“I meant it too. I love you.” I leaned forward and kissed him passionately. I heard someone clear their throat near us. I looked up to see a rather bitter waitress staring at us. She laid the check on the table and walked off. I looked at John and started laughing. I got up out of the booth and so did John. He paid the bill and grabbed his carry on bag. We walked through the security checks down to the train that took you to the terminal. I watched the walls as the train sped down the track. First there were pinwheels that spun as you went by. Then there was a series of arms with axes that looked like they were moving when you went by.

“No matter how many times I see that, I still think it looks cool.” I looked at John above me. His arms tightened around my waist and I felt the laugh rumble through his chest. We stepped off the train and went up the escalator to the main floor. We stepped onto the moving sidewalk and rode down to his gate.

It was only eleven o’clock, so we took seats near the window to watch the planes while we waited. The hour passed all too quickly. John and I stood holding each other until they made the final boarding call. I felt the tears stinging my eyes as I kissed him one last time.

“Shh, don’t cry, Wynter. I’ll be back soon, honey. I love you,” he whispered in my ear.

“I’ll try John. I love you.” John let go of me, picked up his bag, and walked down the hall. He looked back once and I swear I saw tears in his eyes. I went to the window and stood there crying until his plane left the gate.

I slowly made my way back through the airport and out to my car. I sat in my car until I could stop crying and then drove to Ivy’s house. All the lights were off but she had given me a key, so I let myself in. I set my keys on the table by the door and headed to the kitchen. I needed water, crying always made me thirsty. Ivy was in the kitchen getting water. She whirled around almost spilling her water.

“Oh shit, Wynter. You scared me.”

“Sorry, I thought you were in bed.”

“So you got him on the plane.”

“Yeah.”

“Was it hard?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh Wynter,” she came over and hugged me. I began to cry again.

“Oh baby, shh, now don’t cry. I’m sure you’ll see him again.”

“He said three weeks but...”

“Here sit down. I’ll get you some water.” She got me water and a Kleenex. “Now, but what?”

“I miss him already.”

“Wynter, you’re in love.”

“I’m scared.”

“That’s because we never believed in love at first sight and Prince Charming, or Princess Charming as the case may be, and happily everafter. But you found love at first sight Wynter, and isn’t you who is always telling me: ‘Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.’”

“Yes, that’s me.”

“What do you think? Do you think you’ll see him again?”

“Well...”

“Deep down inside, Wynter. You always have a feel for these kinds of things.”

“Yes, but my intuition has been known to be wrong.”

“But nothing. You WILL see him again. Now go to bed, we have school tomorrow.”

“Yes mother.”

“Goodnight Wynter. Love ya.”

“Goodnight Ivy. Love you too.”
