California-based Planetweb and Japan-based Ergosoft (a subsidiary of Koei) have announced that Egbrowser is now available in Japan for the Playstation 2 console.
Egbrowser is web-browsing software made for your Playstation 2, and currently works with any PS2-compatible USB modem. It allows you to e-mail, play MP3 files, and use online features currently in development for current and upcoming Playstation 2 games.
The software comes on a normal Playstation 2 disc, and can be bought separately or come bundled with PS2-compatible USB modems. It will work with most ISP services, and saves ISP settings to the a memory card.
"It's just like any other software for the PS2: It runs off the disc and saves stuff like ISP settings on the memory card," said Ken Soohoo, CEO Plantweb. He also mentioned it views web content much like WebTV would, but it is mainly supposed to be used for online gaming content.
"It's a totally different model from WebTV," he said. "Our main mission is to allow people to hook up and play games online."
Soohoo also stated that Sony will decide whether or not this software will make it to our shores, considering they control licensing agreements for a PS2 products. So far, it appears as if it will stay Japan-only.
