Dance With the Angels

You want to dance with the angels?
Well, then, embroider me with gold,
And I will fly with the angels and you can dance with me.
Sing with the angels?
Well, then, show me a song,
And I will strum with the angels, you can sing with me.

But you want to fall fashionably in love with a woman,
In love with a life you値l adore,
In love with a woman you値l adore.

Under my wings, you値l start to ask yourself,
And under my wings, you値l learn to fly.
Under my wings, you値l come to understand
How to hold on, if you want to.

Or you can dream of the frog legs sitting in the church
In the glass in the sand where my foot steps.
You can dream of the angel in the air; don稚 you see me?
I float in skies, in your eyes, in your eyes.

You want to dance with the angels?
Well, then, embroider me with gold,
And I will fly with the angels and you can dance with me.

Under my wings, you値l start to look for me.
Under my wings, you値l want to cry sometimes.
Under my wings, you値l find someone to hold on to, if you want to.

You want to dance with the angels?
Well, then, embroider me with gold,
And I will fly with the angels and you can dance with me.

question from "ask lisa" on lisaloeb.com:
For years I've been dying to know what "Or you can dream of the frog legs sittin' in the church in the glass in the sand where my foot steps" from Dance with the Angels means? Is there anything behind the verse?

LL: This is a really odd phrase of the song, which I've sometimes felt uncomfortable about. It comes from the image of this ivy growing on the side of a church in Providence, RI, where I went to Brown University. To me it looked like webbed feet-frog-ish? When I was writing the song in college I used this imagery. Looking back, the words are kind of mysterious (?) and not altogether exactly what I meant to say. I think it was meant to sound evil - kind of an either/or situation with the phrase that follows, "or you can dream of the angels in the air, don't you see me?" I like the music of the song, and people request it (I've even played at two different weddings, requested for the "dance with the angels" and love themes, not the odd part in the middle.) The rest of the song I feel much more comfortable with. It's a song that begins with pleading - "please love me - you want to dance with the angels? Well then see me as an angel, and you can be with me." By the end it flip flops and tells the object of affection that he can also learn a lot in this relationship - "Under my wings, you'll learn to fly."
