Welcome to the 5th edition of Gazmission written for Wrestling Envy by Gary Griffiths.

This column will be followed by my special WrestleMania column to be posted on 26th March. Leaving a few days space before WrestleMania itself. That column should include a review of every Mania, the best matches from the  show, and much much more…But now here’s my latest column, so here she blows...

Heroes

When Bret Hart announced his retirement on October 26th 2000 he said this in his statement.

“Every hero becomes a bore at last”

Now this statement made me think…Are there any heroes left in wrestling?

When I started watching wrestling in the early 90’s, every face was a hero, I looked up to every good guy as a role model, and my hero was Bret Hart, if he told me not too be bad, I wasn’t bad, if he told me smoking was wrong, smoking was wrong. Bret was just becoming the main star in the WWF, and I was more happy than anyone. When he won the title in October 1992, I was 7 years old, and every 7 year old needs a hero. Millions of children just like me had Bret to look up to, and as he says ‘Your kids are pretty safe watching me on TV’, and that is very true. Bret was the ideal role model of the early 90’s. He never swore, he’d rarely use illegal objects, and he always played by the rules. Now many people shoot me down for saying this, but I prefer wrestling the way it was in a way. No glitz and glamour, just stories told where they should be, in the ring. There are no wrestlers that can do that now (Not even Benoit!), I couldn’t name a single wrestler who could tell a story in the ring. Sure every WWF superstar can make you believe he is in pain after he’s taken a move, but no wrestlers can actually make me go through emotions. You know Austin’s gonna eventually hit the Stunner and then drink a few beers, you could predict that Rock is going to eventually hit either Rock Bottom, or Peoples Elbow for the big win. And that is one of the reasons the WWF’s ratings are slowly moving down; The product is stale. There isn’t a hero in the WWF. Rock I admit is the closet kids are going to get, and as the age of WWF viewers are getting younger, Vinnie Mac needs to get them a hero. That would make there parents more at ease for them to tune in to Raw or Smackdown. A positive image means a positive review by the pricks at PTC. My final message in this category is that every 10 year old needs someone to look up to, and if that isn’t given to them, there gonna do the bad thing, the wrong thing, the damndest, sickest thing ever, there gonna watch Pokemon…urrrrggghh.

WrestleMania XXIII (23)

As we approach WrestleMania one question keeps ringing in my mind, where will the WWF be at this time in 5 years. Now let’s look at this logically, which could be confusing. Now 5 years ago the main matches on the WrestleMania card were:

Shawn Michaels Vs Bret Hart

Diesel Vs The Undertaker

Ultimate Warrior Vs HHH

Steve Austin (Ringmaster) Vs Savio Vega

Now lets see where all of them wrestlers are now then. Bret is retired, HBK is retired, but now coming back for a final hurrah. Diesel is no washed up Kevin Nash in Dubbya C Dubbyah. Undertaker is struggling along in the WWF, and Warrior is working independants. And there’s the HHH, and Austin, they are now two of the most popular WWF stars at the moment.
So let’s compare that to today. One of the main eventers in this years WM wasn’t even in WWF at this time, and the other was working fueds with mid card jobbers. So lets assign this position to Test. So Test is our future star, and the Rock role in my view belongs to Jeff Hardy. Who is the nearest we’ll get to the future HBK, his route to the top if he splits with Matt will be much like that of the incomprable Shawn Michaels. Lets just now hope injuries don’t ruin Jeffs career. So now we’ve got a Test V.s Jeff Hardy WM main event. Can’t imagine it can ya, well you better believe it buddy. And the mid card match mmmmm, now that’s a tough one. But I’d go with, maybe a Rhino V.s Kane match. Two big guys going at it, just like Diesel V.s Undertaker. But here were relying on Kane having the same lasting affect that Deadman has, which has a chance of happening if you ask me, as so much can be done with his gimmick. No who knows what will happen in them five years, most likely the WWF will get unpopular again, then get popular again. Because pretty soon WWF is gonna be out of fashion and then only the true fans are gonna be left, which to me will be better. But whatever happens in that time Im sure it’ll be one ‘Helluva’ ride.
