:: Getting Over

Welcome to the 3rd edition of Getting Over written for Wrestling Envy by Lewis316.

Welcome To Volume 3

Welcome back to Getting Over, and hopefully my site if you're reading here (at Wrestling Envy.cjb.net). This is my third online column, but I'm starting to get used to writing them whenever the hell I feel like it. So far I've kept them coming every 2 weeks or so, and I don't intend to stop after this column either (unless it completely sucks). If you're looking for a good column I suggest you go to my columns section and check out Gazmission - a good read for the smart fan and mark alike.

WWF/WCW Situation

Since my last column there's been a lot of news surrounding the World Wrestling Federation's purchase of World Championship Wrestling. The day the WWF bought WCW there were mixed reactions over the whole situation. Some fans were excited over the idea of WWF vs. WCW battles, whilst the majority of the wrestlers thought it was the worst possible outcome - Bret Hart even said it was "a black day in wrestling" - he thought it was so bad. To me, this whole situation brings good things and it brings bad things. I am all for the WWF owning WCW as long as they don't go too crazy over the idea of mixed pay-per-views. The World Wrestling Federation's PPV's are getting better all the time and I don't really want to see the likes of OLDberg making it crap - like, err..well, a WCW pay-per-view.

Stone Cold Steve Austin (My fave wrestler if you hadn't already guessed)

Since the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin the WWF has got better coniderably. (When I say return, I mean return to the ring.) Before, even the dumbest WWF fan could guess the outcome of every Raw is War whilst Austin was out, on the shelf. Triple H Vs. The Rock. Every time. Without fail. Okay, the WWF did try to vary this with the introduction of Benoit and Jericho into some feuds - making the odd 6-man tag team matches now and again - but the bare bones of The Rock and Triple H were still there.

I can't really blame the WWF, they couldn't help the neck injury to their biggest draw. The WWF did do a good job of writing Austin out of the storylines - with the whole "Who ran over Austin" angle. But a few weeks before Austin's television return, the angle was given new life - with an actual investigation of the crime. There were many suspects thrown into the proverbial hat - Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Triple H - but then the outcome. Rikishi? When someone told me that it was Rikishi who was revealed as the driver of the car that ran over Stone Cold, I just laughed in their face..and said something along the lines of: "You're joking, right? Stop messing with me, tell me who did it..." But upon the Raw is War on Friday (hey, I'm in the UK) they weren't kidding. Not only that, but it appeared to me that Rikishi had no motive. The crowd were apparantly silenced through shock, when they found out it was their "dancing phatman" Rikishi. That wasn't shock at all. That was more like a, "What the hell are you doing, Vince?" - as if to say that revealing Rikishi of all people, was a BIG mistake. The motive for the hit 'n' run was a racial dispute. Black vs. White wrestlers over the years. The WWF fans weren't buying into the idea at all. "Luckily" Vinnie Mac realised this and seemingly forgot that Rikishi had ran over Austin. On the next Smackdown Rikishi was said to have a "partner in crime." Triple H. Oh yeah. Good one Vince. Reveal Phat-ass-never-deserves-a-push-Rikishi as the driver, then forget about that, and concentrate on the person who put him up to it - igniting another Austin/HHH feud. But if I remember rightly, wasn't Rikishi on WWF Metal back around Survivor Series when HHH supposedly put him up to running over the Rattlesnake? Nevermind, eh Vince? Just bend history so you can push good ol' Rikishi. Yeah right. It never worked - I'm glad in a way - and it never will work. The WWF should push wrestlers who deserve it, but that wouldn't be Vince's style would it now?

At Royal Rumble this year, Haku - another fat waster with microphone hair in my view - was introduced in the Rumble iteslf. -- Hang on Vince..we have two fat people on the roster...they both look like they are from around the same place...I have a cunning plan...let's team Rikishi and Haku with each other...and call them the Islanders - that'll be good... I'll let you decide for yourselves whether this was a good move. I'll give you a hint though: The answer is not YES or MAYBE.

NOTE: I know all of the above has been written about in other columns, but I didn't write columns then. It's a subject I feel I could write a lot about, so I wrote it. Simple as that.

Wrestlemania X-Seven

I'm not going to go into great detail over every match that took place at Wrestlemania because every other column does that and it does just get boring. Wrestlemania was, without doubt, the greatest event EVER. If you disagree, then please try and come up with event that was better than this year's Mania - because I certainly failed when I tried.

The first couple of matched were little more than average, but they got the job done well. From the Vince/Shane Street Fight onwards it was stunning. The TLC II match was shorter than I had guessed but every second of it was full of excitement and not to mention, carnage. The Gimmick Battle Royal sucked. It was nice to see the oldies back in action, but they had no plan whatsoever. The Harcore match was wicked and hilarious too - a good job by all 3 competitors. The Triple H vs. Undertaker match was my favourite match of the night as it was well worked by both men. The hype it received leading up to Mania was well done and the WWF fans weren't disappointed. The end spot was very well worked, and it was nice to see Triple H job :)

The main event. What a main event. I have no complaints about this match-up except the end. I am not fussed over Austin turning heel, but I just thought to myself; "Did it have to happen at the biggest event ever?" But I suppose it had to happen sometime, and I can't deny that it ruined my Wrestlemania just a tiny bit.

Overall it was a solid event. Well done to the WWF for not flooding it with WCW talent as speculated before hand. I would give it a good 9 out of 10 for sure. Now it's a case of how close the WWF can get with their next event - Backlash. We'll have to wait and see and until next time, this has been, Lewis316...
