A Message from
Maureen, President
Winter is just about here! The people who I work with
think that I am weird because I'm looking forward to snow. They do not
understand how snow can give birth to so much fun-filled activity. Welcome to
our new Jackrabbit Coordinator, Don Nixon. He is busy getting the Jackrabbit
schedule organized. Thanks a lot for volunteering, Don.
Another volunteer to thank is Jamie Puumala who has
volunteered to organize the LSSD Championships, January 26 and 27. Watch for
information about this event. Last year our club won both participation and
total points awards at these races. Finally, be sure to mark January 20 on your
calendar for the new Winter Blast event. The executive decided to forego a
Christmas Party due to busy schedules on all parts and to try a January Party
when everyone has more time to relax and to come out and meet other club
members.
See you on the trails!

“Bailey’s Beat” With Eric Bailey, Head Coach
Well, another ski season will soon be upon us and many
a skier is bursting with anticipation. From the predictions I've heard, we
should be in for another great season. The energy shows as the number of
athletes joining us at practice keeps increasing.
I am particularily excited about the
upcoming racing season. Most athletes have shown vast improvement over last
year in both strength testing and test run times. Most athletes have been
training hard all summer and their efforts are paying off. Congratulations to
Sean Crooks and Greg Field who qualified for OFSSA cross-country running..Rena
Bode and Jeff Cameron will be heading off to Silver Star, BC from Nov 17-26 as
part of the Ontario Winter Racing Team for a training camp as well as a set of
Continental Cup races. Following that, Thunder Bay will be hosting a
Continental Cup weekend at Lappe on Dec. 8 and 9 including a "ski
DUATHOLON".
Other highlights will be Big Thunder hosting the LSSD
Championships Jan. 26-27, the Ontario Championships in Marathon Feb. 16-17,
Ontario Winter Games March 6-8, and the National Championships in Canmore from
March 5-10. With this year's awesome group of athletes, coaches, and executive,
I think Big Thunder is set to have an excellent year in 2001/2002.
PRAY FOR SNOW! Eric

Big Thunder is Looking Good!
We will likely be putting in an order again
this year for our popular Big Thunder warm-up jackets, racing suits, and
lycra and fleece hats. If you are interested in purchasing something,
please let Nancy Viljakainen (475-7662) or Eric know. Any Big Thunder member
welcome.
Save-a-Tape Program at A & P
Help us fund raise for the club by saving your
A & P receipts. Start saving
them now and as soon as we get snow, you can put them in the box at Kamview Nordic Centre. The club gets $1 for every $450 in cash
register tape. Tell friends and family to save them too–it all adds up!

Summer Training Camp in Ottawa
This summer, Chris Butler and I journeyed
to our Nation’s Capital to participate in the Ontario Team Training Camp from
August 10th-14th. Along with fellow skiers from across
Ontario, we endured four days of tough training. Once again, Ottawa proved to
be a great spot for summer training. We survived the rollerski workouts in hilly Gatineau Park, the long runs along
the canal, and a scavenger hunt through downtown Ottawa! Some of us got an
extra workout early in the morning if we were late for sessions–this was
courtesy of North Bay coach Martin Nighbor. Of course, Chris and I wouldn’t know
anything about that, would we Chris?
This camp provided another opportunity to
meet and get to know our fellow competitors in the province and to learn about
new methods of training. Chris and I would like to thank all of the volunteers
who made the camp possible, as well as Big Thunder for their support.
Kerrie’s Kooking Korner
Flake & Fruit Squares
3 cups of cornflakes
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup dried chopped apricots
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup butter
3 cups miniature marsh- mallows
1tsp vanilla
Sean Crowley's Rating--Alistair has been
temporarily replaced by Sean--(out of 5*): ***˝
Sean's Suggestions: They are too healthy.
Replace the cornflakes with frosted flakes. Then replace the fruit with
chocolate chips and Skor bits. Keep the marshmallows though. Sean says that the
squares are not good for dessert but only as an energy snack, for example if
you were to go training or something.
Sean....Alistair would be proud...you have replaced him well. Thanks.
Sam Niemi’s Rating: ****˝: More
energy than a speeding locomotive (and much better tasting)!Stuff a couple of
these along with a flask of Pepsi into your tights and say goodbye to the
competition!
