Biography
Crawley P. Dake
Crawley P. Dake was the U.S. Marshal for the Territory of Arizona.
He appointed both Virgil and Wyatt at different points
to the office of Deputy U.S. Marshall serving under him in the town of Tombstone
and Cochise County.
Dake, like most U.S. Marshals of the time, was a political appointee
who did little but polish his chair with his behind in the territorial
capital, getting rich on his percentage of fees and other graft
while his deputies did all the real work.
At the end of his term he took off with a large sum of money. He was a staunch
supporter, however, of the Earps.
Dake was considered ineffective as the U.S. Marshal at best.
