Israeli Patrol Dog Proposal
A small investment to make for the sake of saving the lives of men, women and children
The background:
Well-trained and handled security dogs have proven themselves to be an important deterrent in the war against terrorism. Nowhere has this proven itself more clearly than in Israel. Patrol dogs can detect Arab terrorists waiting to attack Israeli soldiers or enter Jewish towns to murder innocent men, women and children. Trained service dogs have the ability to see, sniff and hear terrorists better than the most sophisticated surveillance and night vision equipment. An aggressive patrol dog with good bite skills can also attack terrorists before they can inflict the desired damage.
Providing patrol dogs is not a political matter. It is not a left- or right-wing issue. Rather, it is a matter of saving lives - often times children's lives, since dogs are also provided to schools where hundreds of schoolchildren can become potential targets for terrorist attacks.
The solution:
Israel's Best Friend, in conjunction with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), trains patrol and other dogs for security duty, and has already aided the IDF in preventing a number of terrorist attacks that would have inflicted major damage and loss of life. Over 30 dogs have been placed in needy towns, but more are needed. Israel's Best Friend K-9 unit maintains a service kennel in Kfar Tapuach, which houses 20 dogs and an additional wing is under construction to meet the growing demands for security dogs. K-9 unit trainers are among the most experienced anywhere and have a remarkable success rate with the dogs they train in three months.
The need:
The cost to sponsor the purchase, training and deployment of a patrol dog and trained Jewish volunteer handler is $6,000. Given the fact that patrol dogs can save Jewish lives and protect property, this is a worthy investment for providing extra safety for people. In addition, sponsorships ranging from $750-$10,000 are needed for bomb sniffer dogs, tracking dogs, hostage rescue dogs, on-vehicle response dogs, sentry guard dogs and home protection dogs. Other operational needs include: 1) Buying and breeding various patrol dogs; 2) Training handlers and dogs; 3) Maintaining dogs and volunteer handlers; 4) Expanding kennels, especially at schools around the nation.

Conclusion:
Not everyone agrees on how to deal with the many complex issues in the Middle East, particularly those between the State of Israel and the Palestinians. Our humanity calls upon us, however, to do everything we can to save lives. These effectively trained dogs have proven to do just that and will continue to do that with the help of caring donors like yourself. The Tanakh (Old Testament) reminds us in Proverbs 3:27, “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.” Along similar lines, the Talmud (an extensive Jewish commentary on the Bible) reminds us that, to save one life is to save the world.
Thank you for your consideration of this life-saving need.
