Cordova Photographs
|
This was where I grew up, we moved to Cordova when I was in 3rd Grade and left right before the start of my senior year in high school. I didn't appreciate the beauty of the area until after I left. I vowed to take a ton of photographs if I ever had the opportunity to return. Below are a few of them. Cordova is located on the Prince William Sound, about 150 airmiles from Anchorage and is accessible by two airlines - Alaska Air and ERA. The Alaska Air flight takes about 30 minutes, ERA is about 50 minutes. The only other way to arrive in Cordova is to take the ferry from either Whittier or Valdez. It's a hidden treasure for those adventureous enough to discover it. This pristine area is off the beaten path and isn't caught up in tourism as other parts of the state are. The main industry here is commercial fishing. Sport fishing is great here also. From May to July the Copper River King salmon run, they weigh anywhere from 25 to 80 pounds. From late spring through late summer the Red Salmon, or Sockeye, run and weigh from 6 to 15 pounds. The Silver, weighing between 10 and 20 pounds run from August through November. I remember as a child hooking a Silver salmon on my line, it took 25 minutes to reel him in, they fight like crazy. Cordova is small, population is about 2,500. You won't find McDonald's here or any other fast food eateries. There is one grocery store, one hardware store, 2 gas stations, and a handful of restaurants and bars. The only "chain" stores I saw were Radio Shack, True Value and NAPA, they were a mini version of what you would expect to find in a large city.
