Colorado Scenery - Crystal
This scenic 4 X 4 drive is located between Crested Butte and Marble, Colorado. To get there from the Marble side you exit I-70 at Glenwood and take Highway 82 to Carbondale, exit at Carbondale and take Highway 133 to the Marble exit. Just follow the road through town and past the lake. Passenger cars should stop here! The road climbs along a spectacular shelf road to the old town of Crystal. We didn't go much farther past Crystal as the trail gets very difficult and it was closed. When the road is open a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required, full-size vehicles are not recommended. Many serious accidents have happened on the section of road from Crystal to Crested Butte. There is a large sign indicating when you are entering the difficult section of this trail. There is a very steep and rough section of road through Crystal Canyon to Schofield Park. There is an Ute Curse placed on this area according to legend. The Utes made the curse because they were driven out of this area and those who dare challenge the curse, must be prepared to endure it's wrath.
