January - Wolf or
Hunger Moon
Driving winter winds and bitter cold often forced hungry packs of wolves
to roam near villages in search of food, thus the name Wolf Moon. In cold
climates of the Northern Hemisphere, it was often a difficult month for humans
to find food.
February - Snow
Moon
The Snow Moon was named because this month often records the deepest and
heaviest snowfalls of winter.
March - Worm or Full
Sap Moon
The Worm Moon received its name because earthworms often made their first
appearance of spring about the time of this full moon. Others refer to this
moon as the Full Sap Moon because it's about the time maple sap begins to
flow in trees.
April - Pink
Moon
April showers bring about the blooming of some of the first spring flowers.
The Pink Moon refers to this spring arrival that announces the start of the
growing season.
May - Flower
Moon
With the blooming season underway, the Flower Moon signals a time when all
of the land seems to be covered in beautiful blossoms.
June - Strawberry or
Rose Moon
The Strawberry Moon perfectly times the first of summer's sweet rewards -
strawberry picking season! Others refer to June's full moon as the Rose Moon
because wild roses begin to blossom this month.
July - Buck or Thunder
Moon
The Buck Moon is named for the male deer that begin to grow their antlers
about this time of year.It's also known as the Thunder Moon because of the
intense summer storm season.
August - Sturgeon or
Green Corn Moon
The Sturgeon Moon refers to the large fish that were easily caught at this
time. Sometimes it's called the Green Corn Moon in recognition of the first
green ears of corn to form on the stalks.
September - Harvest
or Corn Moon
With the crops ready to be harvested and stored for winter's use, the Harvest
Moon was one of the most anticipated full moons of the year. It is sometimes
referred to as the Corn Moon.
October - Hunter's
Moon
The Hunter's Moon signaled the end of crop harvest and the beginning of another
important task - hunting for meat for the upcoming winter.
November - Beaver Moon
With winter just around the corner, the Beaver Moon indicated the start of
trapping season. The traps had to be set before the marshes, bogs and swamps
froze over
December - Cold
Moon
The first month of witner is often accompanied by frequent, frigid nights
which led to the name Cold Moon
Blue Moon - Astronomers classify a blue moon as the second full moon to occur in a single calendar month. We average about 41 blue moons each century, one every 2.4 years.
