"As news of the unprecedented terrorist attacks against the U.S. spread worldwide, Kuwaitis first recoiled in horror and disbelief, and then shared in the grief of the country that liberated them from aggression in 1991.
As the reality of the terrorist attacks set in, Kuwaiti citizens at all levels of society quickly moved to express their condolences and support for the American people and its leaders.
The Emir of Kuwait Shaikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister Shaikh Saad al-Abdulla Al-Sabah sent cables of condolences yesterday to President George W. Bush expressing their sincere sympathy.
The first Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, who is currently in New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, also condemned the attack in a cable to Secretary of State Colin Powell and extended his deep condolences to the victims’ families, the
U.S. government, and the American people. He added that he is positive that the U.S. will overcome the crisis.
Kuwait’s elected National Assembly also condemned the terrorist attacks. Acting National Assembly speaker, Mubarak Al-Khureinij said the attacks were ‘a violation of humanity and universally shared values.’ Al-Khureinij said it would be necessary ‘to track down and punish those involved in this operation.’
Kuwait’s Oil Minister Adel Khalid Al-Sebeeh vowed on Wednesday to try to make up any shortfalls of oil supplies on world crude markets. ‘There should not be a fall in supplies,’ Al-Sabeeh said. ‘But in case of such a fall, Kuwait will take the necessary measures to guarantee the stability of the world market in cooperation with other OPEC members.’ Al-Sabeeh also extended his sympathies to the American people.
The U.S. Embassy’s diplomatic spokeswoman in Kuwait said ‘we deeply appreciate the numerous messages of sympathy we have received from the Kuwaiti government and private citizens.’
In Washington, D.C., Kuwait Information Office Director Dr. Shafeeq N. Ghabra said, ‘We cannot express our horror over what has happened, and we are encouraging Kuwaitis in the U.S. to help out any way they can.’
