"On Wednesday, the government of Niger issued a strongly worded condemnation of the September 11 terrorist attack on the United States, declaring:
‘Le gouvernement de la République du Niger condamne sans réserve et avec fermeté ces gestes ignobles indignes de notre civilisation contemporaine et s'associe à la communauté internationale pour faire de manière résolue au terrorisme sous toutes ses formes en tant que méthode de lutte et de revendication politique.’ (The government of the Republic of Niger strongly and unconditionally condemns these ignoble acts unworthy of our contemporary civilization and joins the international community in resolutely opposing terrorism in all forms as a method of struggle and making political demands.)
The government communiqué went on to say that Niger 'seeks to reaffirm its commitment to be at the side of nations that love peace and justice for any international initiative aimed at eradicating terrorism.'
In addition to the government statement, President Tandja Mamadou sent a message of condolences to President Bush, expressing a ‘strong and vigorous condemnation of this unacceptable demonstration of blind violence which has just struck many innocent people.’ The chief of State said, in part, ‘On behalf of the government and people of Niger, and for my own part, I would like to express to yourself, to your government, to the families of the victims so brutally murdered, and to the whole American people, our deepest sympathy.’
