Reed Richards needed someone to pilot his experimental spaceship, and he asked his college roommate, Ben Grimm. The Yancy Street tough-guy turned jet pilot agreed, and when the ship was struck by as cosmic ray burst, Grimm became the stone-skinned orange Thing, and one of the Fantastic Four.
