Walt Simonson

This piece has the greatest story behind it. In 1981, at my first comic convention, Simonson was sitting next to Frank Miller. At the time I was not familiar with his work, but looking at the sketches he was doing I considered asking for one. Alas I was too late and he was booked solid. One of the last pieces he drew was this sketch, and I was blown away by it. Shortly after I discovered his Manhunter stuff and was completely hooked. Jump to five years later, I was at my favorite comic shop, and the owner told me that he bought out comic collection along with a few pieces of art. One of the sketches was this same Batman drawing. After some raving and screaming, and I believe threats of bodily harm, I succeed in buying the sketch. Jump another year, and I was lucky to visit Walt Simonson at his studio. At some point in the afternoon I told him the story of the sketch. He was amused and told me to bring along the sketch the next I would see him so he could sign it to me. Which is exactly what he did.
