Serving eleven consecutive life sentences in prison, Cletus Kassidy came into contact with fellow prisoner Eddie Brock (Venom), who had become separated from the alien symbiote Spider-Man brought back to Earth from the Secret Wars. Draw to its host, the symbiote freed Brock from prison, but left behind a spawn that bonded with Kassidy, creating the homicidal menace known as Carnage.
