The Enforcers

When Spider-Man first faced off against the Enforcers, he was ill-prepared for this trio of hired muscle under the command of the Big Man. As individuals, Spider-Man could easily defeat any of the Enforcers. But when the lightning footwork and Judo skills of Fancy Dan combined with the rope-throwing talents of Montana and the brute strength of Ox, this threesome formed a flawless team that sent Spider-Man reeling. Only with the aid of the NYPD, and later the Human Torch, Spider-Man prevailed.

Following a brief alliance with the Sandman, the Enforcers went on sabbatical for some time. They were lured back into action by the second Big Man, Frederick Fowswell's daughter Janice, in her war against the Crime-Master. Teaming with the Human Torch, Spider-Man successfully trounced the lot of them.

Deciding that if three members could nearly beat Spider-Man, then five could surely finish the job, the Enforcers added the lithe-limbed talents of Sylvester "Snake" Marston and the weight-wielding fists of Willard "Hammer" Harrison. The quintet set out to squash Spider-Man once and for all. What they could never have anticipated was the timely intervention of the former villainous Sandman, who had turned over a new leaf and came to Spider-Man's side in the midst of battle.

The new line-up lasted one more job, an ill-fated murder contract against Daredevil, before returning to their original line-up. Perhaps tired of the uncertainties of freelance work in New York's criminal syndicates, the founding Enforcers accepted semi-permanent positions in the employ of the Kingpin of Crime. They remained with the Kingpin until Wilson Fisk was ousted from power in an underworld coup, once again returning the trio to their original distinction as muscle-for-hire. The name New Enforcers was later adopted by another unrelated group of super-villains-for-hire, which also did not last long.
