Dr. Abel Cuvier

The Character

The head of the controversial Chimera Institute, Dr. Cuvier preaches about the beauty of animal gene augmentation, a popular trend among teens known as splicing. But Cuvier has much more in mind then just cosmetic improvements, and is ready to show any "norms" who dare oppose him how powerful those who have been spliced can be.

However, Cuvier's plans were much more twisted. He dreamed of a perfect being combining the intelligence of humans with all the benefits of the animal kingdom. When he attempted to kill district attorney Sam Young, he was caught and was forced into hiding. In a final confrontation with Batman, Cuvier was mutated into a grotesque being and apparently died in an explosion.

Parallels and Thoughts

With the advances in the real world in the human genome, cloning, etc. Could Dr. Cuvier's dream be close to reality? Current advances in deciphering the human genome and genetically modified organisms seem to suggest so.

Though a potentially interesting villain, Cuvier is not very developed as a character. What exactly is he trying to acomplish? How did he get started in the splicing business? A background would have helped to make him stand out more from the rest of Terry's rogue gallery. Cuvier's man-bat transformation of Terry brings back memories of Dr.Kirk Langstrom and his experiments in splicing in "On Leather Wings" However, like his predecessor, Dr. Emile Dorian, from "Tyger, Tyger", Cuvier's appearance in future episodes seems quite dim.
