The Royal Flush Gang

The Character

The Royal Flush Gang is a sophisticated and ruthless gang whose crimes all center on playing cards. The members are King, Queen, Jack, Ten, and Ace. They are quite aristocratic out of costume. An older version of the gang faced Bruce Wayne as Batman many years ago, and has returned to Gotham, as the King wishes to face the new Batman.

Matters are complicated when Ten, a young girl named Melanie Walker, meets Terry and the two fall in love. Both struggle with the pains of their alter egos, and in the end it is Batman and Ten who face off, not Terry and Melanie.

Parallels and Thoughts

The Royal Flush Gang is actually a group of villains that have appeared in several DC comics, including Justice League and Star man. While the gang itself simply plays the part of the Villains Of The Week, Ten/Melanie has a much greater impact on Terry. He is forced to take a closer look at whom he really is when he finds out her secret, and he hesitates while fighting her. Likewise, Melanie struggles between her feelings for Terry and her position in the gang. The parallels between the two are reminiscent of the similarities between Bruce Wayne/Batman and Celina Kyle/Cat woman, who is even mentioned in this episode. If The Royal Flush Gang, and Melanie, return, it will be interesting to see if anything further develops between Terry and Melanie, now that her other life is out in the open.
