The
Character
Walter Shreeve was a brilliant sound engineer whose
passion was inventing
amazing but impractical inventions. When Derek Powers wishes payment
for helping Shreeve's company out financially, Shreeve turns to
his inventions, including a powerful sound suit that emits sound
waves that can destroy anything in their path. His job: kill Bruce
Wayne. His first attempt is unsuccessful, leading to his identity
being discovered and him taking on a new persona as Shriek, the
master of sound. His priorities change to taking down Batman, and
the battle leaves him ironically deaf. He returns to disrupt all
communication in Gotham. His price for restoring sound and speech
to Gotham-Batman!
Parallels
and Thoughts
Shriek has no parallel to any specific previous Batman
villain, but carries on the tradition of villains with some silly
theme that serves as their personality, and no real motive for their
crimes. There is nothing wrong with such characters, as long as
they are kept to a minimum. While Shriek's powers are interesting,
he really has no distinctive qualities that set him apart from so
many of the supervillans of the past. Perhaps in later appearances,
his persona will be more built upon.
