The
Character
"When the doors of perception are open, everything
will be as it is, infinite."-William Blake
The Spellbinder gives this quote new a dimension as
his illusions alter the
perception of his victims while they unknowingly commit crimes for
him. Formerly Ira Billings, a psychologist who worked at Hamilton
High School, Billings remade himself into a costumed villain known
as Spellbinder. Using his psychological knowledge and technology
that would allow him to thrust his victims into fantasy world where
they would unwittingly do his bidding, Spellbinder planned to pick
the city clean, using the kids he was supposed to be helping to
find out where the wealth lay. Even Batman was subject to his illusions,
and only his link to Bruce allowed him to see past them and defeat
Billings.
Parallels
and Thoughts
This also isn't the first time that Batman has been
up against a Spellbinder. Apparently he has fought another Spellbinder,
one Delbert Billings in the Comic book series.Spellbinder is very
reminiscent of both the Mad Hatter and the Scarecrow. He uses mind
control and psychology to accomplish his crimes. His crimes could
prove to bring about some of the best Batman Beyond episodes. In
fact he gets Batman accused of murder due to one of his illusions.
One is reminded of Perchance To Dream and Over The Edge.
Though one has to wonder why so much criminal activity seems to
originate from Hamilton High.
