BAPTISTE - Nothing Shines Like a Dying Heart LP In the four years since they've been around Baptiste have steadily carved a path through the hearts of a devoted London following. Sounding like they should have been on Sarah Records in the late 80s, but with a tough, serrated edginess, they are masters at bringing to light the bitter tragedies of everyday urban life which usually pass unnoticed. 'A New Career in a New Town' describes the heartbreak of a relationship upset by unequal ambitions with clarity and a calm dignity: "I never wanted this / You always wanted more than this." Songs like 'The Quiet Times' and 'Tired Bodies' offer hope amid the bleak cityscape by taking comfort in self-reliance and survival, "As the debts rise above our necks / We learn to live even faster". If you need to feel better about something extremely bad, this is the band to turn to. Spirit and resiliance no matter what. 'Nothing Shines Like a Dying Heart' is available through Cargo on Linear Records. |
