SHALE & EYES HIGH

Little is known about Shale, other than that he was the Recognized lifemate of Eyes High and the father of Skywise. Rain talks about how his Recognition didn't need prompting, making it appear as though his Recognition was "true". The names of his parents are unknown and it is not known if he had brothers or sisters.

Shale was honored by Eyes High when she allowed him to stay with her for the birth of their child, although that honor was short lived. Two young humans knew of Eyes Highs' nest and struck Shale with rocks until he fell from the tree landing on the ground. Eyes High climbed down to him, exchanged soulnames one final time and watched as he was killed by the humans.

Shale had gray-silver hair and gray eyes. He wore grays and browns, a leather ornament similar to Eyes High's and his soulname was Zash.

Eyes High was a loner, preferring to be alone, rather than with other members of her tribe. It was this desire to be alone that caused her to make a nest in the highest tree that she could find to have her child in "so he could be as close to the stars as he could be". She allowed Shale to stay with her in her nest. After he fell from the nest and was killed, the humans took her to their camp and were going to sacrifice her to Gotara. However, the two young males saw that she struggled with the cub within her and stole her, taking her back to the forest down the river. It was there that Skywise was born, on a raft, rather than close to the stars. Eyes High died after giving birth and sent to her chief telling him where to find the infant.

Eyes High had curly blonde hair, similar to Joyleaf and Rillfisher, and blue eyes. Her soulname was Koei. Her parents are unknown and it is unknown whether she may have been a daughter of Joyleaf or a sister to Rillfisher. Eyes High wore a charm in her hair, which Skywise found turns later on a human, the same human who had taken her.
