About Melanie Berg:

Yeah, well I was born in '81 so you do the math. I've been eccentric ever since I was little, I hated dolls, loved dinos and legos (still do!), my fave show was Bill Nye and infomercials, and my hero has always been Indiana Jones. Today the temp outside was something below 50 and I'm still wearing flip flops. I'm a hopeless romantic, cynic, and optimist all in one. I was a shy kid, but something in the end of high school snapped in me, since then I've opened up and showed the world my weirdness and rants (yes Creed SUCKS, no amount of radio play time will change my mind.…

I jam to Chris Isaak, Sugar Ray (yeah, they sold out, but I still love every song from Lemonade and Brownies to their self titled, "Fly" type songs aren't the only things they play you know...), miscellaneous ska (MMBT/Flogging Molly/Mad Caddies/etc), punk (whatever I can get my hands on, I'm not picky while I'm ignorant at the time) and other categories with in the groups of 80's, punk, alternative, folk, and even country. I mention music because I think that's a great metaphor for me, I like pretty much everything (except radio music. Damn you Creed/Linkin Park/Nickelback/on and on). Life's an acquired taste. I'M and acquired taste.

Jake's Start

Yeah, well this whole thing started summer of 2001, well the Jake's Take characters. The WHOLE thing started before that. When I was a kid I dabbled in drawing, but once middle school came about the creativity was drained out of me. Somehow the upper grades create the illusion that the arts are unnecessary. Either way, after I graduated I saw the X-Men movie and realized I had never read a comic book. Frankly I felt gypped on my childhood somehow. Like an alien in downtown Reno, I wandered in and bought some Gambit issues. The stubborn girl I am got angry that some people could draw perfect people page after page. I've seen art everywhere, but it never truly amazed me until comics. Of course, since then I've been greatly addicted to the comic industry (Rock on Hitman/Spidey/Preacher/and other good stuff!), but from that day I started doodling.

Doodling is greatly underappreciated. How else do you learn? When you learn an instrument, you don't bang out a classic your first day, you practice scales first. But I guess the reason my doodles were discouraged is that they took up all my classes. Calculus, chemistry, theater, mineralogy, etc… I still think it kept me more focused than others 'cause I was still awake, try it, it works!

Jake came around in my Chem 102 summer class, 4 hours a day is quite draining. So he came about, and soon after Liz and Darren. Originally they were going to star in a comic book about a supernatural curse given in the form of a tattoo on Jake. If you see any old scanned doodles of him, he always has a neck tattoo, it's still weird not drawing that anymore, but in strip format it made him look like he had a hairy back and chest.

Finally, Jake and his friends turned into a strip as a winter break project. I grew up on "Calvin and Hobbes" (have every book!), and currently read "Sluggy," "Frazz," "9 Chickweed Lane," and "Sinfest" avidly. Online comics (Sacred Pie/Strings of Fate) are ADDICTIONS I tell you. Enjoy!
