After criminal Harry Dawes escaped capture in South America, he made his way by sea to Easter Island. There, he encountered a strange little man who told him of a secret behind the large statues on the island. They weren't statues at all, but living beings.

Also, he promised Harry a wealthy sum if the criminal would help him find a parchment that would bring the statues back to life, and under his control. Harry found the parchment, but betrayed the old man and tried to take control of the living stone men himself.

The stone creatures balked at his commands, and revealed that they were on earth because of a malfunction on their spaceship eons before. They revealed that they would take Harry with them as a specimen in their zoo. When Dawes tried to find sanctuary with the old man, he revealed that he himself was one of the creatures, having spent years trying to revive his comrades.
