In Africa, explorer "Frank" discovers a giant ant, Grottu, commanding an army of ants to take over the local towns. Frank gets the idea to dump tons of sugar on Grottu, and the monster's minions eat him up alive. "Frank" was later revealed to be Ulysses Bloodstone.

Grottu's body was then somehow recovered by Frank Johnson, but it, along with a group of monsters, came to life again. He was seemingly destroyed by the Fantastic Four.

Grottu's spirit then took control of Scott Lang, The Ant-Man. It took the combined forces of the Fantastic Four, Thor and the Godpack to drive him out of Lang's body. (FFUnlimited #7)

In an alternate reality, Grottu was one of several aliens and monsters summoned by the villain Jack O' Lantern to attack the world. The creatures were defeated by a group of supernatural crusaders.
