SO YOU THINK YOU'RE ALLERGIC

(orig. released Dec. 1, 1945)

Apparently, a three-year hiatus was just what this series needed. This is where it really starts to get funny.

Joe goes off on sneezing jags, thinks he's allergic to everything, and tries every cure possible. (Apparently, regular narrator Art Gilmore was also suffering from some kind of malady, as he's replaced here by Knox Manning, who fills in just fine.)

The format is practically the same as in the first two shorts, but something has been transformed from within. Writer-director Richard L. Bare, as he would later do in directing TV's "Green Acres," starts to have some fun with the form he himself created. We know we're in for something delicious when we get a Scottish flashback with Joe as the very first scientist who tries to deduce what causes allergies. The psuedo-educational bits that were such a bore in the first two films get played for laughs here; even the no-name extras seem to be having a great time.

At movie's end, Joe finally figures out what's causing him to sneeze so much. I won't reveal it here, as it makes for a great wrap-up -- not to mention the priceless scene of George O'Hanlon throwing himself all over the furniture trying to get away from his allergy source.
