SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

(orig. released Apr. 14, 1951)

Joe and his wife go out to see a Western movie, and Joe imagines himself on screen as "Hop, Skip, and Jump-Along McDoakes."

There are a few cute gags, but not enough to offset the queasy datedness of the movie. Between TV sketches of the day and Blazing Saddles, Western parodies have become almost as cliched as the Westerns themselves. (Besides, Joe already did a [far superior] Western parody in So You Think You're a Nervous Wreck.) And you actually see a few shots of whooping Indians getting shot off their horses that would never pass muster in today's PC world. After a while, you start to sympathize with Joe's wife and wish he really would grow up.
