SO YOU WANT TO LEARN TO DANCE

(orig. released March 28, 1953)

Hot on the heels of So You Want to Be a Musician comes another Joe McDoakes musical gem.

Joe's boss Mr. Blivens (Emory Parnell) invites Joe to a Saturday-night dance at his country club. Joe sheepishly turns down the invitation because he doesn't know how to dance. But Mr. Blivens isn't about to let that get in the way -- mainly because Mrs. Blivens outlasts every man on the dance floor, and Mr. B. needs one more sucker to keep Mrs. B. occupied.

This one just builds and builds. George O'Hanlon has a fine time making a dancing fool of himself -- first acting like Buster Keaton, with his body askew while his feet are nailed to the floor, and eventually evolving into a carbon-copy Fred Astaire. And William Lava's music has never been better. The movie's fantasy punchline, with Joe a winner for a change, is an absolute howl.
