SO YOU WANT TO BE A HANDY MAN

(orig. released Jan. 3, 1951)

Joe's wife is out of town, and that's about all the excuse this movie needs for Joe to get into mischief with his not-quite-there neighbor Marvin (Rodney Bell). Marvin convinces Joe that Joe should become handy around the house like he is. They start out trying to repair Joe's sprinkler system and end with a simple paint job that...well, if you've ever seen Laurel & Hardy painting everything in sight in The Second Hundred Years, you have a pretty good idea where this is going.

And of course, Laurel & Hardy is exactly who this pair evoke when they start trying to fix things. They don't pull off the slapstick quite as admirably as L&H do, but it certainly isn't for lack of trying. The escalation of the paint job is definitely the movie's highlight.
