SO YOU WANT TO BE POPULAR

(orig. released March 12, 1949)

You can't go wrong when you pair up Joe with his blowhard office mate Homer Hotbox (Clifton Young). Here, Joe comes to the conclusion that he's a complete zero personality-wise -- so for advice, he turns to Homer, who's in the negative figures personality-wise.

This short subject is an array of beautifully delivered set-pieces, as Joe tries to build his personality from a foundation of sludge. It culminates in Joe's delicious, D'Artagnan-esque office fantasy (wonderfully scored, Wagnerian style, by William Lava) and in Joe finally getting the comeuppance to Homer that we've been waiting for ages to see. For once, Joe emerges as a winner right to the end, and so does this delightful short.
