SO YOU WANT TO BE PRETTY

(orig. released Mar. 10, 1956)

Joe and Alice are physically unattractive but happy together. Alice tells Joe she will be staying with her mother for two weeks, but she actually goes to a plastic surgeon and has her face reconstructed to make herself beautiful. Little does Alice know that two doors down, Joe is doing the very same thing. After their (surprisingly speedy) recovery from surgery, Joe and Alice, each unbeknownst to the other, go a local bar. Not recognizing each other but finding instant attraction, they carry on a week-long affair as "Roger" and "Cynthia."

An interesting and amusing morality tale. One isn't quite sure if writer-director Richard Bare intended the "beauty is only skin deep" message that seriously (he seems more eager to play up the mistaken-identity bit at the end), but the message gets through nevertheless. But then, have you ever noticed that in the movies, the "beauty is only skin deep" message is delivered only by actors who look as good as George O'Hanlon and Jane Frazee?
