SO YOU WANT TO BE A SALESMAN

(orig. released Sept. 13, 1947)

Here, Joe is portrayed as a returning war veteran who can land a job only as a vacuum-cleaner salesman. The movie's funniest conceit is that the vacuum office is run like an Army training camp, with the boss inspecting each salesman's vacuum as though it was a rifle.

After that, we get some picturesque views of California scenery as Joe goes door to door, trying to hawk his vacuum. Most of Joe's sales attempts are pretty funny, until he actually finds a woman who wants to buy the vacuum sight-unseen and blows the sale by giving her the pitch she didn't want.

Best gag is the closer, where Joe finally becomes the salesman "you're gonna hear from," though not in the way he'd intended.
