Culver City

Downtown Culver

Culver City is just another small suburb of the metropolis of Los Angeles. In times gone by, it was home to several film studios, including our favourite, the Hal Roach Studios. Hal Roach, being the entrepreneur he was, believed in making films with what was available. Not for him the expensive lavish backdrops to display his stars. He went out into the streets around his studios, and filmed there.

Unfortunately, the Roach studios do not exist any more. After closure in 1963, the site was redeveloped and a huge car sales business now occupies the lot. Here is the plaque which is still available for viewing.

Putting Pants on Phillip

The first film acknowledged to pair up Stan and Ollie was called "Putting Pants on Philip". During the film, the Boys caper in front of the Harry H. Culver Building, now known as the Culver Hotel.

Bohemian Girl

In front of a shopping area is this delight. Now adorned with garish advertising, this is alleged to be the same gypsy caravan which we can see in the film "Bohemian Girl".

Hog Wild

Remember the scene right at the end of "Hog Wild", when the Boys and Mrs Hardy are sat in a crushed car? In the background, you can see this building. Unfortunately, it now forms part of the University of Southern California, and is difficult to locate for sightseers.

Perfect Day

This is one of my favourites. The house looks as though it has not been altered at all since it was used in "Perfect Day" in 1929. It is well kept, and has a beautiful garden.

Big Business

Fin's house is systematically destroyed by Stan and Ollie in this silent film. However, the house has been refurbished to a high standard, and Fin has sold the house to another family now!

The Music Box

Now the moment you've been waiting for. 133 famous steps in the Silverlake area. If you go and find the steps be careful, as this area is not a nice one for visitors. I didn't have a piano with me, unfortunately.
