The New Theatre
The Boys played twice in Hull. The first time was in July 1947, at the New Theatre. This building is a lovely pristine looking building on the edge of Hull's shopping area. The Hull Daily Mail reported that children shrieked and adults roared when they saw their cinema heroes on stage. They left to "terrific applause" after a sketch and song which lasted twenty minutes.
On the Wednesday of that week, Stan, Ollie, and their wives Ida and Lucille attended a luncheon in their honour at the Royal Hotel, next to Hull Paragon station. This had been organised by the local managers, presumably to thank them for the profits which Stan and Ollie had brought them over the years.
Royal (Station) Hotel
Six years later, Stan and Ollie returned to Hull and appeared at the Palace Theatre, which unfortunately no longer exists. Again, as expected, they were very popular with their public, and again on the Wednesday, they attended a luncheon, this time at the White House Hotel. While they were here, they also opened a jeweller's shop in Toll Gavel, Beverley.
