Cowboy Bebop Rating: Genre: Action, Comedy, Sci-fi Studio: Sunrise Year: 1998 Length: 26 episodes Reviewer: ThunderEmperor Synopsis: Spike Spiegel and Jet Black are bounty hunters. They devoted their lives in hunting down wanted criminals with sizeable reward money on their heads as a living (they are not always successful in their missions). During their hunts, our duo unwittingly picked up additional members. There's the annoying and obnoxious but smart and sexy Faye Valentine, the stupid but a computer hacker kid Ed and the cute and cuddly dog Ein. They journey around the galaxy in their spaceship Bebop in hopes of finding whopping bounties. Review: This review was originally posted last 2003-03-17, 04:51:01. I had to redo it since my original review was too short and there wasn't anything significant and important to be read there. It was based only on my viewing experience. When I first watched Cowboy Bebop, I was totally amazed and captivated by its incredible art and animation. It's like a very detailed manga or a very detailed painting come to life. Majority of the show is drawn in cels than CG, which is a definite big plus for me. Anime series of today are relying on CGs but not Cowboy Bebop. About 85% are hand drawn while 15% are computer generated. Personally, I really love watching anime series with less CG 'coz it's a great treat for my eyes. Hand-drawn animation gives us a sign that the animators here are not lazy and not relying on CG during the animation process. I have never seen such an impressive work of art in an anime series. Anime titles like Ninja Scroll, Marcross, Evangelion and other anime classics are examples of hand-drawn anime titles. Before, I declared Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust's art and animation the most unbeatable. But now, Cowboy Bebop beats Bloodlust's and I consider Cowboy Bebop with the undisputed excellent art and animation. Why? I can't think of any other anime title that can even CB's animation. CB is a good one I tell you, there are a lot of unique things that surrounds this title. The music themes alone are very unique. CB features lots of cool jazz music, opera music, J-pop, etc. done by renowned Japanese artists... not to mention the illustrious music composer Yokko Kanno. Yes! If it's Yokko Kanno's compositions, the soundtracks are a must-have. Can you guess other anime series with Jazz music? None? Just as I thought. CB is not only unique by its superb music but in the art and animation as well. As I mentioned above, the art and animation are of top-notch quality. After the opening sequence, my jaw suddenly dropped and hit the floor. Throughout the entire series, the animation never fails to stay solid. The fighting scenes are surprisingly unique too (unique again), like the duel of Spike and Vicious (Spike's former friend). Try to guess who will win, Spike with his gun or Vicious with his sword? Unique isn't it? Some fight scenes feature martial arts to spaceship battles to gun-slinging action. Can you guess other anime series with unique fighting scenes too? I guess you can't again huh? I was relieved that there are no still action scenes here in CB. There are also lots of interesting characters with interesting personalities, interesting pasts, etc. My favorite character has to be Spike. I really like the way he thinks and the way he does. Do not forget Julia, torn between her two lovers Spike and Vicious. The character development is very nice. Spike's past really interests me. Other than Spike's past, Jet, Faye, Ed and even Ein all have touching pasts. The character designs are attractive, as is always the case with Toshihiro Kawamoto's character designs who is also responsible for Golden Boy's character designs. Oops! I mustn't forget the seiyuus. There are lots of popular anime seiyuus can be found here in CB. I am a very big fan of anime seiyuus so let me mention them here in my review (sorry 'coz it'll be long). Other renowned seiyuus make quest appearances in some episodes. Yamadera Koichi (aslo known as Kibagami Jubei in "Ninja Scroll") plays Spike Spiegel, Megumi Hayashibara (also known as Ayanami Rei in "Evangelion"). Some characters in some episodes are done by more popular anime seiyuus. Sakamoto Maaya (also known as Kanzaki Hitomi in "Vision of Escaflowne") plays Stella and Takamasa Nakao (also known as Onizuka Ekikichi in "GTO") plays Roco in episode 8: "Waltz for Venus", Midorikawa Hikaru (also known as Tamahome in "Fushigi Yuugi") plays Lin in episode 12-13: "Jupiter Jazz Part 1 and 2" and other much, much more renowned anime seiyuus. My favorite anime seiyuus are all here. I really love hearing their performances XD. An excellent anime from Sunrise produced in a very, very high budget. A great combination of comedy, action, sci-fi, romance and adventure. Its comedy deserves a 10 on how messed up some of their missions get. CB is a very suitable anime to every anime fan who fancy anime titles mixed with comedy, action, sci-fi and adventure. Hmm... my female friends are having a hard time liking CB but all my male friends like CB. I may be giving Cowboy Bebop a five-star rating but I still have some complaints. The dark tones or dark parts of the series can be annoying sometimes 'coz I don't get to see what's happening or what's on the screen. The filler episodes also, some of which are boring and just plain filler. Therefore, I know you have no more questions... have a pleasant time watching CB... if you wanna watch it of course. |
