Fruits Basket Rating: Genre: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy Studio: Studio Deen Year: 2001 Length: 26 episodes Reviewer: ThunderEmperor Synopsis: Fruits Basket is a story of Honda Tohru who recently lost her mom in a car accident and is now living alone in a tent in a vacant lot for some weeks now. She goes to school and works at night to survive. Enter Sohma Yuki, Tohru's secretive and handsome high-school prince who found her inside her tent. Yuki invites Tohru to live in the Sohma house with his relatives. But what Tohru doesn't know is that the Sohmas are cursed people. Whenever the Sohmas get hugged by the opposite sex, they turn into talking animals. Review: Very entertaining and highly recommendable! You will never get disappointed! This anime is suitable to all audiences. There are no boring moments, every episode is loads of fun. Fruits Basket easily makes it to my top 5 favorite anime. I love the contents, the story, the characters, the moral lessons to be learned... everything. It's all there why this anime is one of the best. I have no complaints in the simple art and animation so I'll give it a 9/10. The humor and character designs reminded me somewhat of Kare Kano's. I always keep on assuming that the author of Kare Kano is the same person responsible for Fruits Basket (still not sure). Don't you think so? Some jokes get a little corny sometimes. Ah, the good part! My favorite anime seiyuus (voice actors) are present here in Fruits Basket. Seki Tomokazu (also known as Van Fanel in "Vision of Escaflowne", Sagara Sousuke in "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu") plays the hot-tempered Sohma Kyo, Aya Hisakawa (also known as Skuld in "Ah! My Goddess", Haruka Shitou in "RahXephon") plays the secretive prince Sohma Yuki, Horie Yui (also known as Narusegawa Naru in "Love Hina", Miyafuji Miina in "Onegai Twins") plays the sweet Honda Tohru and other renowned seiyuus in anime. The music is very soft and pleasant. FB's music is one of those types that give us pleasant dreams. All of the characters are weirdoes... I mean, they're all so weird that makes them great clowns... makes them funny. They have their own unique personalities. I can't believe someone could make different personalities out of great number of characters. Character development is more emphasized than the curse part so there are some episodes with no funny Jyuunishi transformations -- this what separates Fruits Basket from Ranma 1/2. The sheep and monkey Jyuunishis have no contributions to the story. They can only be seen in their introductory episodes. In these episodes, they show their sorrowful pasts, do a little something and that's that. They can no longer be seen in further episodes. Even if they are part of the Jyuunishi, I consider them extras. There are many self-contained episodes like stories of everyday life, maybe because there isn't much of a plot. The ending is okay but there are few questions left unanswered. We didn't get to know more about Akito especially his Jyuunishi form and who has the curse of the horse Jyuunishi. It would have been okay if Fruits Basket's number of episodes is more than 26 so they could explain the unexplained. Add to that, 26 episodes are not enough for an anime with lots of characters. Two more episodes left, I was expecting some explanations on Akito but there isn't. His character development is okay really, but it was never explained why Akito has this evil and cruel personality. A wonderful magical, dramatic comedy. The story may be lacking but what the heck. Tohru's relationship with the Jyuunishis is all there is to it. Every episode finished will leave you thirsting for more even after the last. One of the most memorable anime titles in 2001. Yer on for a great treat in this double-dozen anime. I am so glad I stumbled upon this anime. |
